In “Building a better campus”, the construction and planning of higher education’s, like universities, buildings is discussed. It is stated that around 50% of a group surveyed said that they have planned, will plan, or have already built new buildings for students to use! It was also stated the main purpose for construction was student growth, and the type of buildings receiving the most construction and renovation would be academic buildings. Lastly, the journal describe that a campus’ beauty and environment had an important role in students’ decisions to attend or not. Many students are attracted to newer buildings and schools with scenic areas, so the campuses are an influential and important variable for universities.

One quote that I believe is significant is the statement that 47% of major new construction projects and 37% of renovation projects are for the purpose of building academic buildings. This meant to me that my university’s statistics should generally be around the same amount if it means that they truly care about my education.

Big Future 9/14/15 Assignment
We were
asked to visit a website called Big Future, which is an extension of www.collegeboard.org. In this section,
we could enter information about what we look for in a college or university.
We filled out filters that included criteria like field of study, size and
location, activities and sports and organizations, and even tuition and aid. After
having entered all my information into the filters for the college search, I
found that were plenty of options for me in the state of Georgia. Out of all the
schools listed, I decided that my three tops choices would be the University of
Georgia (Athens, http://www.uga.edu/), Emory
University (Atlanta, http://www.emory.edu/home/index.html),
and Georgia State University (Atlanta, http://www.gsu.edu/).
I am not sure what schools will actually accept me, but when choosing which
school is best for me, I want a quality medicine program. I will study Human
Physiology, so I will choose the school that is most focused in medicine and
has the most programs and advantages when it comes to exploring outside school
and being hands-on. After looking into the schools, Emory and UGA were the ones
with most advantages in the medical field.
For my
major of Human Physiology, there are basic medicine class requirements. I will
need to have taken classes like Human Anatomy and Biology, and Chemistry, and
Physics. As for my requirements of the school I choose, I would like a large
variety for some aspects. I would like the number of students to be anywhere
from 5 thousand to 30 thousand. Although that is a large range, I chose it
because I do not really know what I really like in a school. As for location, I
would like the school to be in Georgia, and I would like it to be around 50
miles from my house. In the fields of sports and organizations, I would prefer
that the university to offer all type of sports because although I am not too
athletic, I would like the opportunity to try it out, and I would definitely like
there to be band, Hispanic and Latino, accelerated, and study abroad programs.
Tuition and financial aid is also a factor for my selecting, but I know I am
eligible for scholarships. I know I am eligible for the Zell Miller and Hope
Scholarships, and after looking at http://www.ngcf.org/page.aspx?pid=396,
I learned that I was also eligible for Hall County scholarships like the
William T. Carlisle Memorial Scholarship and the Jim and Dee Snow Optimist
Scholarship.

Time Management 9/8/15 Assignment
With school
coursework, my future internship, a job, marching band, the church orchestra
and youth group, community service, and general family and friend activities, I
feel confident to say that I am a fairly occupied person on a regular basis.
Although the responsibilities I listed out are my main ones, they also included
sub-tasks that I must accomplish. So in order to assure that I accomplish every
assignment, task, and job I am given, I tend to write myself a schedule with
the importance of the task I have to finish. I manage my time by scheduling my
activities on multiple different days so that I am not overworked on one single
day, and I always set time aside for emergencies, to finish longer tasks, and
if possible, relax. In my future internship, I believe that time-management
will be key to my excellence and success. I want to accomplish and learn as
much as possible in the time allotted, so I will make sure to schedule myself appropriately
and give every task the required amount of time it needs to be finished successfully!

Growing Leaders Blog 8/31 Assignment
After
reading Growing Leaders, which can be
found at http://growingleaders.com/,
by Tim Elmore, I was amazed by the sudden realization of how serious and
profound an internship or mentorship can truly be. In the blog, the writer
explains that a friend of his had had an unfortunate and disappointing
experience with his interns. The summer interns were 6 college students, and
some of them were preparing to graduate and enter the workforce. The students
represented millions of college students that would soon graduate. However,
from his experience with these interns, the internee knew that the adults in
their lives had not prepared them. The writer wants the reader to understand
that an internship is truly just a prolonged, 12-week interview. Each and every
day at an internship should be seen as an opportunity to watch and learn and
work. The writer listed off the most sought out qualities in an intern, and
they included: teach ability, initiative, responsibility, and energy.
As for my interview, I viewed this
blog as an eye-opener and a reminder for my standards and actions. In general,
I will try to act as mature and serious as possible. I want to be a mentee that
is easily taught, and I want to be viewed as an asset to the company. I want to
be energetic and responsible at work. I want to have a successful year with my
mentor, and in order to positively ensure that this will happen, I will always
greet my mentor with a respectful saying, followed by their name, and a firm,
professional handshake. Every day, I can set up a serious and enthusiastic tone
with that. Afterwards, I will also ask what must be done for the day, and if
there isn’t a specific task, I will help in any way possible. This step will
demonstrate and prove my initiative. Lastly, I will ask to make sure that all
tasks and jobs have been finished before I leave every day, and I will leave
with a firm handshake and a salutation with their name.
