12/7/15 Assignment

When I first began my internship at the Guilford Clinic, I thought it would be hectic and busy. I imagined that working in an emergency clinic would require a high-paced person, but to my relief, I have found out that this career allows for all people to work. Now that it is colder and in the middle of flu-season, we are at our busiest time. I usually help see 20 patients in 4 hours. There are rush hours around 11:00 am through roughly 12:30 am, but afterwards, there is always a calmer period where we can all eat lunch and relax more. I assumed the clinic would be much busier, but because I do not want to feel overwhelmed, I am happier with the amount of patients and work we have now. Overall, this workplace and career are excellent choices for me and everyone qualified. At Guilford, there are busier days with 100 patients, and there are slower days with only 40, so I must be adaptable to all situations. I must also be a hard worker that is not afraid to help and learn. Whether it is bringing new patients in, helping other nurses and doctors out, doing paperwork, or treating patients, there is always something to do, so it is crucial that I am a hard worker. Also, it is important that I be willing to learn and help. When working there, you can spend an entire day with your coworkers, so it is very important that you create bonds so that you can help each other. At the end, if you are a qualified nurse or doctor looking for an emergency clinic, the Guilford Clinic is an excellent choice and place!

My essential question: 

Apart from going to school, how must I develop and progress to be a Surgical Physician?

1. I selected this as my essential question because after my mentorship experience and other work experience, I know that I must prepare in ways other than educationally in order to be a successful physician. I would like to explore and figure out if and how I should prepare myself physically, mentally, and socially.
2. In the process of finding the answer, I am most excited about finding all the different varieties and methods by which I can learn. There will only be one answer for me personally, but I am excited to learn about other professionals’ experiences.
3. I believe that this essential question is exactly what I am desiring to learn and find out from my mentorship and experiences. The topic is directly connected to my mentorship, and I will directly use it and connect to my personal works.

11/16/15 Blog Assignment

                After reading the article, it is even more obvious that the youth needs to work harder than ever to seem professional and serious in the work place. As a young adult with first-hand experience, I know of multiple challenges that the youth face. First of all, it is always vital to show your best side in interviews and at work. It is important to have a clean, first impression by dressing professionally and speaking about your best qualities and balances. The article said that young adults can often come off as self-absorbed or too forward, and that is why, in interviews and at work, one should act respectful and caring. In my job interview, I tried my best to allow my employer to speak first and take the lead, and that made me seem as a good follower and listener. And when given the opportunity to speak, I did my best to seem as a hardworking, qualified worker, and now, I have been employed for over 7 months!

                Social Intelligence is then the most important quality for a worker or an intern. Personally, I would like to simply define social intelligence as the ability to work well in all situations and with all sorts of people. In my mentorship and at my job, I do my best by gaining experience and creating friendly and professional relationships with all my coworkers and mentees. I want all the people in the facilities to rely on me to finish the job adequately. And as I previously stated, social intelligence is the most important quality because it is the clearest evidence of adaptability. A worker and intern should be able to work in multiple positions in case of need. A worker should also be able to adapt to all workers, including new workers. In my opinion, adaptability, social influence, is the most wanted and vital quality I would look for if I were an employer.

11/9/15 Blog Post Assignment

At my mentorship, I have a very repetitive and usual routine. When I get there, I just say hello to everybody, and I settle into my chair and “station”. A usual day consists of me taking some vitals with the various nurses when patients are seen, helping with treatments and procedures, and cleaning around and restocking. I try my best to get to know everybody that I come into contact with, and I always strive to be an asset and aid to the nurses and physicians. In general, I have absolutely loved and enjoyed my time with the Guilford Immediate Care Clinic. Specifically, over the last month, I have learned to set up breathing treatments and give them to patients. I have even had the opportunity to do this treatment by myself twice! I have also learned how to input information into the x-ray computer for patients, and I have aided nurses in all types of x-ray procedures.

One of my favorite and most helpful classes for this mentorship has been my honors biology class. In that class, I had a very hands-on experience, and I learned a basic understanding of the human body and its systems. Although I am not as educated as a nurse or a physician in the medical field, I did learn enough from that class to help me understand what the nurses and doctors talk about and what they mean in certain situations. At the end of the year, I did well in that class, and I believe and hope that at the end of this year, I will do very well in my mentorship!

11/2/15 Assignment

                After many weeks at my internship, I feel that I have truly learned and connected with the staff and people there. I am an intern at the Guilford Immediate Care Clinic, and my mentor allowed me the opportunity to train and intern with the several nurses. As a student hoping to become a surgical physician, I truly feel that my internship wants the best for my education because of the personal goals they have allowed me to achieve. At the beginning of the year, I wanted to make professional connections with people in my area of study. I also wanted to gain a sense of what it is like in the work environment and what to do on the job. I have personally achieved these goals because I have been able to meet all the various physicians at the clinic, and I have also met the majority of the many nurses and staff members. I have learned how to take vitals, and I have also aided with procedures like ear lavages, x-rays, breathing treatments, and vaccines. I learn so much treating patients and through these procedures, so although it varies, I feel like I have a good understanding of what the work conditions are like in that clinic. Work can typically be busier around these times, and a normal work shift is either 6 hours or 12 hours. Work is also high-paced and always filled with tasks to complete throughout the day. I also feel that I have made my supervisors’ tasks easier by simply aiding in all ways possible. I help the nurses, who are my main supervisors, by taking vitals and preparing for procedures that are often done. I also restock the procedure rooms as often as possible, and I try my best to maintain the facility clean. I completely appreciate the opportunity that has been presented to me this year through the help of the program and clinic, and I cannot wait for the rest of this year to come.

10/26/15 Mentorship Write Up Assignment

                My name is Eduardo, and I am very heavily involved in my school and community. I am currently a senior at East Hall high School. I am a member of the Marching Band, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Youth Leadership Hall. Apart from all those clubs, I am a duel-enrollment student, volunteer, and church-orchestra player. However, from all my activities and commitments, I always find time to attend my internship! I’ve known I’ve wanted a doctor since my earliest visits to the hospital and clinics, and after all my experiences with doctors, this internship is perfect! I can use my time-management skills, my alertness and focusing skills, and my social skills to get the most of this internship, and I am truly and surely getting ahead of my peers and excelling into my career. 

                After around a month, when most other students had already started their internships, my advisor contacted me to tell me she had the perfect place for me! It seemed last-minute and late, but I was eager and ready to meet my mentor. The Honors Mentorship Program had connected me with and placed me at the Guilford Immediate Care Clinic in Gainesville. I had never personally visited the Guildford Clinic before, but after a quick search, I found the address. On my first day, I dressed up and left my house early. Upon arrival, I was surprised to see multiple buildings in the complex, and I was honestly lost. I accidently went into the wrong building, but after some help, I found the correct building, and I was introduced to my mentor, Mrs. Gina Savage! She was very friendly, and she introduced me to all the receptionists, physicians, and nurses. Since that first day, I have continued my internship, and I have now been there for around two months.

                I intern on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I have a rather interesting routine. When I enter the building, I always say hi, and I go straight to the nurses’ station. My mentor is Mrs. Savage, but she has given me the opportunity to train with the nurses, and I have learned plenty! Although the majority of patients come in with minor problems, like colds or pains, I have learned to take vitals, aided with x-ray procedures, and have seen blood drawn on multiple occasions. These are all very exciting and informative moments for me, it is giving me the opportunity to learn what the work-environment is like and what I need to know for my career. I love my internship at the Guilford Clinic, and I might possibly have a future there.

                For the remaining portion of this school year, I plan on continuing my internship at the Guilford Clinic. I then plan to attend college at either of my top two choices, the University of Georgia or Georgia State University. I then plan on attending medical school and finishing my career to become a surgical physician! Maybe I’ll even have a future with the Guilford Clinic!
