For this assignment, I read a very direct article titled How to Become a Surgeon from theapprenticedoctor.com/. As the title says, this article just explains general requirements for becoming a surgeon, a brief history of surgery and its impact, the principles of surgery, and the types of surgeries, along with some complications. My favorite quote from the requirements for a surgeon section was, “A strong desire to become a surgeon. This is very important. Do not even think of pursuing surgery as a career if you are still in any measure unsure about your decision” (Anton). This seemed like the perfect way to explain to people considering a medical career or not. This general requirements section also stated that a surgeon would be asked to handle pressure and crisis well, keep their concentration for long periods, and a respect for the human body and life, to name a few. Some of the principles needed for surgery listed were proper treatment planning, minimum invasion, and purposeful actions. I liked these best because I believed they were the best summaries for the pre-surgery and during-surgery phases. Lastly, the article listed multiple disciplines in the field of surgery, and I personally leaned towards the general surgery discipline with a specialization in vascular surgery. That led into the types of surgeries, and it was amazing to read about all of them from open surgery to cryosurgery to the use of shock waves.
When looking around the website, I found that this site was a very vast and credible source as well. Theapprenticedoctor.com is a website focused on helping aspiring medical professionals in multiple ways. The site offers articles, training kits, and even medical camps for students! When looking further into their articles section, I found that this site was actually a team of various healthcare professionals. I found this to be extremely assuring when it came to the validity of the article. Now after reading the article, I find myself thinking of all the possibilities I have, and I continue to narrow my selections down. I aspire to become a trauma surgeon, but I have also considered the possibility of becoming a general surgeon that specializes in vascular surgery. I know my possibilities are endless until the time comes, but I see myself returning to this article time and time again in order to inform myself again.
