5/2/16 Reflection Post

After my year in the Honors Mentorship Program, I feel incredibly prepared and excited for my college years and future career. I spent my mentorship time at the Guilford Immediate Care Clinic in Gainesville, and my time there could be split into two general times. My first time at Guilford could be described as my opening up and getting used to the routine and nurses. The second stage of my time at the Clinic could be described as a time of learning and experiencing how to properly work with patients.
My first stage of adjusting and opening was the important stage because I wouldn’t have ever learned anything without opening up and adjusting! The first thing I did was begin to connect with all the nurses, learn their names, and figure out which ones worked best with me. After a week or two of doing that, I found that I worked best with Laura, Carlee, and Todd. They were very accepting of me, and they taught me so much! I then had to adjust and get used to how we worked there. Typically, we called and brought patients back and into the procedure rooms. What I gathered from this first stage was how to settle into a new environment and workplace. I also learned how to work with all sorts of new people, and most importantly, I learned how to treat patients when I bring them back.
My second stage of learning and experiencing was much more specific and meticulous. As I grew accustomed to the normal routine, I tried to explore and learn more about different procedures, tests, and tasks. I continued to bring patients back, and whenever possible I would try to bring patients in by myself. As I learned more and more, I realized that I was preparing myself for my career and future. I will use what I performed and learned during my time at the Guilford Clinic for my classes in college, and I will definitely repeat the various procedures in my future medical residency. After my entire year, I realized that my view and perspective for my career has not exactly shifted but rather grown in excitement. As I gain knowledge and experience, I have and will continue to grow excited about all my future procedures, patients, and opportunities.

3/14/16 Video Presentation Assignment

Before watching this video on public speaking and confidence, I believed I was fairly good at speaking in front of crowds due to my experience, but after the video, I learned I can certainly keep working on my presentations skills. With step one, "prepare prepare prepare", I noticed that I can work on my introduction hook and my conclusion. My PowerPoint is structured in a way that will easily allow me to separate the main points and explain them individually, but in introducing my topics, I can prepare clever and witty hooks in order to engage my audience. My conclusion also serves well as a way to sum up my main points, but I can definitely work on creating a more resonating conclusion. For step two, "posture and physicality", I believe I am well prepared. I naturally have a straight and professional posture, and I obviously know that dairy products are unsafe for the stomach during presentations. This also seemed easy to me due to experience in past presentations and not being so anxious. Step three, "pander to your audience", also seemed to come naturally to me. I have never been the most serious person unless the occasion calls for it, so in my presentations, I try my best to act natural and intriguing. I'll certainly prepare by thinking of jokes and knowing what I want to say so that I am not reading from the PowerPoint or from cards. This video reminding me of the essentials for presentations. Although I may be naturally quiet and introverted, I believe I am also naturally good at presentations. I'll make sure to come back to this video on later occasions and in my preparation for my relevant group presentation.

2/15/16 Assignment

Annotated Bibliography
For this assignment, I read a very direct article titled How to Become a Surgeon from theapprenticedoctor.com/. As the title says, this article just explains general requirements for becoming a surgeon, a brief history of surgery and its impact, the principles of surgery, and the types of surgeries, along with some complications. My favorite quote from the requirements for a surgeon section was, “A strong desire to become a surgeon. This is very important. Do not even think of pursuing surgery as a career if you are still in any measure unsure about your decision” (Anton). This seemed like the perfect way to explain to people considering a medical career or not. This general requirements section also stated that a surgeon would be asked to handle pressure and crisis well, keep their concentration for long periods, and a respect for the human body and life, to name a few. Some of the principles needed for surgery listed were proper treatment planning, minimum invasion, and purposeful actions. I liked these best because I believed they were the best summaries for the pre-surgery and during-surgery phases. Lastly, the article listed multiple disciplines in the field of surgery, and I personally leaned towards the general surgery discipline with a specialization in vascular surgery. That led into the types of surgeries, and it was amazing to read about all of them from open surgery to cryosurgery to the use of shock waves.
When looking around the website, I found that this site was a very vast and credible source as well. Theapprenticedoctor.com is a website focused on helping aspiring medical professionals in multiple ways. The site offers articles, training kits, and even medical camps for students! When looking further into their articles section, I found that this site was actually a team of various healthcare professionals. I found this to be extremely assuring when it came to the validity of the article. Now after reading the article, I find myself thinking of all the possibilities I have, and I continue to narrow my selections down. I aspire to become a trauma surgeon, but I have also considered the possibility of becoming a general surgeon that specializes in vascular surgery. I know my possibilities are endless until the time comes, but I see myself returning to this article time and time again in order to inform myself again.

2/1/16 Assignment

For this week, I have created a Prezi to serve as a visual aid for my interview questions. I finished my interview late into January, so after having all my answers, I wanted to present them in a way that would seem interactive and entertaining for the audience. Instead of a simple and somewhat boring PowerPoint presentation, I created a Prezi that zooms in and out of different bubbles which include my questions and the answers from the interview. I have also started to think of other ways I can gather information concerning my essential question. I have started to research the internet for more articles that may help me fully answer the question, but I have also considered taking surveys from the nurses and staff. I hope to find one or two more articles that will help me finalize my answer to the essential question, and in the coming weeks, I will start to develop my survey, if I decide to keep that idea.

Annotated Bibliography Summary Assignment

Annotated Bibliography Summary
After completely and carefully reading the “Surgery Basics” article, I found that I learned more than I expected, and it was very full of information. The article comes from the website findingdulcinea.com/. At first, I chose this website because it was one of the sites provided by my instructor. However, upon further review, I found that this website is a data source for multiple topics and subjects. It covers all materials from school and many more! This page is extremely credible just due to its source and background and experience. In general, this article offers exactly what the title says: surgery basics. It is broken into 5 separate parts, and the first one has to do with the basics. A patient always wants to be informed, and that leads to the next section, which is titled “Choosing a Surgeon and Hospital”. The article says, “Having surgery can be a scary event…. Arming yourself with information about the surgery before it happens help settle your nerves.” This quote seemed important to me because a surgeon I should always provide plenty of information to all patients to make them feel secure. I should also be prepared to provide a comfortable and inviting facility. In third section, it says, “Your doctor, of course, will always be your best source of medical advice”, and this quote stuck with me because as a surgeon, I should counsel my patients. The final two sections have to do with support groups for after surgery and with children and surgery. I should always be willing to accept patients, especially children. Although I imagine surgery on children might be difficult, I know it must be much more difficult for the parents of the children. I will do whatever possible to help the child, and after the procedure and care, I can always offer the families with support group information so that they feel more comfortable and informed with the help of families like them. After my annotated bibliography assignment, I felt like I learned even more than I expected to. I know what patients want and look for in their doctors, so I will use this article as a constant reminder that I must be a professional, informative, and prepare surgeon, and I must also be humane and caring.

1/11/16 Interview Assignment

The following is an interview by Eduardo Carrasco to Mrs. Gina Savage.

  1. What is your official job title at Guilford?
Answer: I am currently the General Manager for Guilford Immediate Care.
Reflection: This seemed like the obvious answer since she seemed involved in all areas.

  1. What are your responsibilities?
Answer:  I am responsible for payroll, staff scheduling, staff supervision, overseeing the daily operations of 2 busy Urgent Care facilities and assisting the physicians to name a few.  I have many responsibilities which are both clinical and administrative.
Reflection: Although I had seen Mrs. Savage involved in all areas of the clinic, I never knew she was also involved with another one of the facilities, and I admire the dedication and hard work her job requires.

  1. Why did you choose this career and pathway before/in college?
Answer: As a child, I always knew that I wanted to be in the medical field. My mom worked in the medical field and I simply wanted to follow in the same path. I did venture out at one time and thought of becoming an English teacher because I loved Grammar. However, I didn’t care for the Literature (Reading) so that quickly changed my mind.
Reflection: Personally, I have never had a passion for English, but I did relate when she said she always knew she wanted to be in the medical field. Although many pathways and careers arise when you are a child and teenager, I have always wanted to be involved with medicine and helping people.

  1. What major did you graduate with from college?
Answer: Nursing, Business
Reflection: I also aspire to receive a nursing major from college!

  1. After school, what were your expectations and plans for your career?
Answer: I have always loved to help people and the satisfaction that comes from it.  I wanted a stable career with opportunity for advancement and to always be willing to learn new things.  I have been in the medical field for 30 years and I am still learning new things. That’s what keeps it exciting.  The medical field is changing all the time with new advanced technology and medications.
Reflection: After hearing and reading this, I was excited to see what the future holds. As Mrs. Savage said, the medical field is always developing and advancing, so with this career, I can constantly learn and accommodate myself with new technology.

  1. What connections and professional relationships would you say best helped you land at the Guilford Clinic after graduating from college?
Answer: Well, my graduating and employment with Guilford Immediate Care had many years in between them.  My sister worked in the billing office and notified me when they began looking for a manager.  I was currently working for a local pediatrician’s office and the pediatrician had just passed away after a courageous battle with cancer and I was going to need to begin looking for another job.   I applied for the position and was hired.  It has been a very stressful and busy position, however, still very rewarding.
Reflection: I have always heard that it is difficult to find a job in your field of major after graduating college. However, it is relieving to hear that although Mrs. Savage did not immediately land in the Guilford Clinic, she was able to work in an office involved in her major.
  1. Apart from education and professional connections, what abilities/qualities did you have to work on in order to prepare yourself for the work environment? (ie. Maturing, Flexibility, Endurance)
Answer: I have always said that being Mature, Flexible and willing to learn will take you a long way.  I encourage my students and my staff to always be willing to learn new things.  Knowledge is power.  You may not see the results right away but you will eventually.  For example, you take a CPR class however; you will only see the true results if you have to use it.  When the need arises, you will know what to do.  Always work hard and maintain a good work ethic.
Reflection: I completely agree with Mrs. Savage. Maturity and flexibility can take a person a long way, but with her added quality of the willingness to learn, I believe that a person can do amazing things. I believe she described an incredible worker and doctor, but if I had to add anything, it would be a jpassion for medicine and helping others.

  1. What would you say are some pros and cons of your job?
Answer: Pros:  Helping people and working with a good group of people that we consider to be like family.
Cons:  Very high level of stress due to the multiple responsibilities of being in management.  Long working hours takes away time with my family.
Reflection: I have always loved the idea of having a “family away from family”, so it is encouraging to read that the nurses, doctors, and staff members get along and help each other out while helping patients. On the contrary, I am also heavily devoted to my family, and I will be in the future as well, so I will have to try my best to balance my personal life and my work life.

  1. What specific advice would you have for me or any student pursuing a medical degree?
Answer: Set goals.  Stay focused and you will achieve those goals.  You can do it!   You are very motivated and take initiative.  I can certainly see your enthusiasm and desire to learn more in the medical field.   Never tell yourself you know everything and there is nothing else to learn.  You will always have the opportunity to learn something new.  The more experience and knowledge you obtain the further it will take you.
Reflection: This last answer was absolutely motivating and encouraging. Although the road may be tough, I am willing to set goals and take the initiative. I do desire to constantly learn more and help others along the way!

Thank you to Mrs. Gina Savage for participating in this interview for Honors Mentorship.
