12/7/15 Assignment
When I first began my internship at the Guilford Clinic, I thought it would be hectic and busy. I imagined that working in an emergency clinic would require a high-paced person, but to my relief, I have found out that this career allows for all people to work. Now that it is colder and in the middle of flu-season, we are at our busiest time. I usually help see 20 patients in 4 hours. There are rush hours around 11:00 am through roughly 12:30 am, but afterwards, there is always a calmer period where we can all eat lunch and relax more. I assumed the clinic would be much busier, but because I do not want to feel overwhelmed, I am happier with the amount of patients and work we have now. Overall, this workplace and career are excellent choices for me and everyone qualified. At Guilford, there are busier days with 100 patients, and there are slower days with only 40, so I must be adaptable to all situations. I must also be a hard worker that is not afraid to help and learn. Whether it is bringing new patients in, helping other nurses and doctors out, doing paperwork, or treating patients, there is always something to do, so it is crucial that I am a hard worker. Also, it is important that I be willing to learn and help. When working there, you can spend an entire day with your coworkers, so it is very important that you create bonds so that you can help each other. At the end, if you are a qualified nurse or doctor looking for an emergency clinic, the Guilford Clinic is an excellent choice and place!

11/30/15 Essential Question Assignment:
My essential question:
Apart from going to school, how must I develop and progress to be a Surgical
Physician?
- I selected this as my essential question because after my mentorship experience and other work experience, I know that I must prepare in ways other than educationally in order to be a successful physician. I would like to explore and figure out if and how I should prepare myself physically, mentally, and socially.
- In the process of finding the answer, I am most excited about finding all the different varieties and methods by which I can learn. There will only be one answer for me personally, but I am excited to learn about other professionals’ experiences.
- I believe that this essential question is exactly what I am desiring to learn and find out from my mentorship and experiences. The topic is directly connected to my mentorship, and I will directly use it and connect to my personal works.

11/16/15 Blog Assignment
After
reading the article, it is even more obvious that the youth needs to work
harder than ever to seem professional and serious in the work place. As a young
adult with first-hand experience, I know of multiple challenges that the youth
face. First of all, it is always vital to show your best side in interviews and
at work. It is important to have a clean, first impression by dressing professionally
and speaking about your best qualities and balances. The article said that
young adults can often come off as self-absorbed or too forward, and that is
why, in interviews and at work, one should act respectful and caring. In my job
interview, I tried my best to allow my employer to speak first and take the
lead, and that made me seem as a good follower and listener. And when given the
opportunity to speak, I did my best to seem as a hardworking, qualified worker,
and now, I have been employed for over 7 months!
Social
Intelligence is then the most important quality for a worker or an intern.
Personally, I would like to simply define social intelligence as the ability to
work well in all situations and with all sorts of people. In my mentorship and
at my job, I do my best by gaining experience and creating friendly and professional
relationships with all my coworkers and mentees. I want all the people in the facilities
to rely on me to finish the job adequately. And as I previously stated, social
intelligence is the most important quality because it is the clearest evidence
of adaptability. A worker and intern should be able to work in multiple
positions in case of need. A worker should also be able to adapt to all workers,
including new workers. In my opinion, adaptability, social influence, is the
most wanted and vital quality I would look for if I were an employer.

11/9/15 Blog Post Assignment
At my mentorship, I have a very repetitive
and usual routine. When I get there, I just say hello to everybody, and I settle
into my chair and “station”. A usual day consists of me taking some vitals with
the various nurses when patients are seen, helping with treatments and
procedures, and cleaning around and restocking. I try my best to get to know
everybody that I come into contact with, and I always strive to be an asset and
aid to the nurses and physicians. In general, I have absolutely loved and
enjoyed my time with the Guilford Immediate Care Clinic. Specifically, over the
last month, I have learned to set up breathing treatments and give them to
patients. I have even had the opportunity to do this treatment by myself twice!
I have also learned how to input information into the x-ray computer for
patients, and I have aided nurses in all types of x-ray procedures.
One of my favorite and most helpful
classes for this mentorship has been my honors biology class. In that class, I
had a very hands-on experience, and I learned a basic understanding of the
human body and its systems. Although I am not as educated as a nurse or a
physician in the medical field, I did learn enough from that class to help me
understand what the nurses and doctors talk about and what they mean in certain
situations. At the end of the year, I did well in that class, and I believe and
hope that at the end of this year, I will do very well in my mentorship!

11/2/15 Assignment
After
many weeks at my internship, I feel that I have truly learned and connected
with the staff and people there. I am an intern at the Guilford Immediate Care
Clinic, and my mentor allowed me the opportunity to train and intern with the
several nurses. As a student hoping to become a surgical physician, I truly
feel that my internship wants the best for my education because of the personal
goals they have allowed me to achieve. At the beginning of the year, I wanted
to make professional connections with people in my area of study. I also wanted
to gain a sense of what it is like in the work environment and what to do on
the job. I have personally achieved these goals because I have been able to
meet all the various physicians at the clinic, and I have also met the majority
of the many nurses and staff members. I have learned how to take vitals, and I
have also aided with procedures like ear lavages, x-rays, breathing treatments,
and vaccines. I learn so much treating patients and through these procedures,
so although it varies, I feel like I have a good understanding of what the work
conditions are like in that clinic. Work can typically be busier around these
times, and a normal work shift is either 6 hours or 12 hours. Work is also
high-paced and always filled with tasks to complete throughout the day. I also
feel that I have made my supervisors’ tasks easier by simply aiding in all ways
possible. I help the nurses, who are my main supervisors, by taking vitals and
preparing for procedures that are often done. I also restock the procedure
rooms as often as possible, and I try my best to maintain the facility clean. I
completely appreciate the opportunity that has been presented to me this year
through the help of the program and clinic, and I cannot wait for the rest of
this year to come.

10/26/15 Mentorship Write Up Assignment
My name
is Eduardo, and I am very heavily involved in my school and community. I am
currently a senior at East Hall high School. I am a member of the Marching
Band, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Youth Leadership
Hall. Apart from all those clubs, I am a duel-enrollment student, volunteer,
and church-orchestra player. However, from all my activities and commitments, I
always find time to attend my internship! I’ve known I’ve wanted a doctor since
my earliest visits to the hospital and clinics, and after all my experiences
with doctors, this internship is perfect! I can use my time-management skills,
my alertness and focusing skills, and my social skills to get the most of this
internship, and I am truly and surely getting ahead of my peers and excelling
into my career.
After
around a month, when most other students had already started their internships,
my advisor contacted me to tell me she had the perfect place for me! It seemed
last-minute and late, but I was eager and ready to meet my mentor. The Honors
Mentorship Program had connected me with and placed me at the Guilford
Immediate Care Clinic in Gainesville. I had never personally visited the
Guildford Clinic before, but after a quick search, I found the address. On my
first day, I dressed up and left my house early. Upon arrival, I was surprised
to see multiple buildings in the complex, and I was honestly lost. I accidently
went into the wrong building, but after some help, I found the correct
building, and I was introduced to my mentor, Mrs. Gina Savage! She was very
friendly, and she introduced me to all the receptionists, physicians, and
nurses. Since that first day, I have continued my internship, and I have now
been there for around two months.
I
intern on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I have a rather interesting routine. When
I enter the building, I always say hi, and I go straight to the nurses’
station. My mentor is Mrs. Savage, but she has given me the opportunity to
train with the nurses, and I have learned plenty! Although the majority of
patients come in with minor problems, like colds or pains, I have learned to
take vitals, aided with x-ray procedures, and have seen blood drawn on multiple
occasions. These are all very exciting and informative moments for me, it is
giving me the opportunity to learn what the work-environment is like and what I
need to know for my career. I love my internship at the Guilford Clinic, and I
might possibly have a future there.
For the
remaining portion of this school year, I plan on continuing my internship at
the Guilford Clinic. I then plan to attend college at either of my top two
choices, the University of Georgia or Georgia State University. I then plan on
attending medical school and finishing my career to become a surgical
physician! Maybe I’ll even have a future with the Guilford Clinic!

10/19/15 Assignment
I have participated in my internship for a little more than a
month now, and I can honestly say that my perception has not changed much. As a
student seeking to be a Surgical Physician, I am taking the first step by
interning with several nurses, and I get to experience what their day is like.
At first, I expected to constantly be moving and seeing patients, but I was
slightly wrong. In the mornings, it is busier, and we are consistently treating
patients, but once I am done with one patient, we must take time to upload information
from charts to the computer system, and we must give the physician time to see
every single patient! After the busier, morning hours, there is a period of
slowness around lunchtime. During this time, we catch up on uploading
information from charts, and we too eat lunch.
What
came as a surprise to me was the friendly and relaxed environment between the
nurses, doctors, receptionists, and all workers. It is obvious that we must all
work together in order to finish our tasks in a professional and timely manner,
but it was nice to see that in our busy hours, the nurses all helped each other
in whatever way we could. The physicians would also do their part to see
patients and treat them as soon as possible. And in our slower hours, it was a surprise
to see that all the employees would eat and talk in friendly tones. And
although there is a regular routine of seeing patients, treating patients, and
releasing patients, I have found that there is no real boringness in my
internship. I always have the opportunity to help the nurses with patients, and
I always see nurses uploading information. And even if we happen to have an
extremely slow day, one can always count on seeing that one “interesting”
patient.

10/5/15 Reflection Assignment
I believe that this journal article gave me some insight into what to truly expect from a good university. Colgate University and Sewanee: The University of the South have both been ranked very highly for the beauty of their campuses, and they have stated that their campuses have influence on a student’s decision on whether to attend or not. Universities and colleges that truly care about their students’ education and resources also provide the most updated and professional buildings to insure that the students truly learn and gain experience.
This entire article can now be a vital resource for me in life and assignments. I can use this article as a legitimate resource in papers and assignments because I have back-up when it comes to proving education and facilities. I want the best for my education, and I know that I will have to not only choose my favorite school that offers the best program for me, but also the best campus that will allow me to excel. With the proper facilities and resources, I can prosper in my studies and research, and I now know what I need to look for when visiting colleges and universities once again.

In “Building a better campus”, the construction and planning of higher education’s, like universities, buildings is discussed. It is stated that around 50% of a group surveyed said that they have planned, will plan, or have already built new buildings for students to use! It was also stated the main purpose for construction was student growth, and the type of buildings receiving the most construction and renovation would be academic buildings. Lastly, the journal describe that a campus’ beauty and environment had an important role in students’ decisions to attend or not. Many students are attracted to newer buildings and schools with scenic areas, so the campuses are an influential and important variable for universities.

One quote that I believe is significant is the statement that 47% of major new construction projects and 37% of renovation projects are for the purpose of building academic buildings. This meant to me that my university’s statistics should generally be around the same amount if it means that they truly care about my education.

Big Future 9/14/15 Assignment
We were
asked to visit a website called Big Future, which is an extension of www.collegeboard.org. In this section,
we could enter information about what we look for in a college or university.
We filled out filters that included criteria like field of study, size and
location, activities and sports and organizations, and even tuition and aid. After
having entered all my information into the filters for the college search, I
found that were plenty of options for me in the state of Georgia. Out of all the
schools listed, I decided that my three tops choices would be the University of
Georgia (Athens, http://www.uga.edu/), Emory
University (Atlanta, http://www.emory.edu/home/index.html),
and Georgia State University (Atlanta, http://www.gsu.edu/).
I am not sure what schools will actually accept me, but when choosing which
school is best for me, I want a quality medicine program. I will study Human
Physiology, so I will choose the school that is most focused in medicine and
has the most programs and advantages when it comes to exploring outside school
and being hands-on. After looking into the schools, Emory and UGA were the ones
with most advantages in the medical field.
For my
major of Human Physiology, there are basic medicine class requirements. I will
need to have taken classes like Human Anatomy and Biology, and Chemistry, and
Physics. As for my requirements of the school I choose, I would like a large
variety for some aspects. I would like the number of students to be anywhere
from 5 thousand to 30 thousand. Although that is a large range, I chose it
because I do not really know what I really like in a school. As for location, I
would like the school to be in Georgia, and I would like it to be around 50
miles from my house. In the fields of sports and organizations, I would prefer
that the university to offer all type of sports because although I am not too
athletic, I would like the opportunity to try it out, and I would definitely like
there to be band, Hispanic and Latino, accelerated, and study abroad programs.
Tuition and financial aid is also a factor for my selecting, but I know I am
eligible for scholarships. I know I am eligible for the Zell Miller and Hope
Scholarships, and after looking at http://www.ngcf.org/page.aspx?pid=396,
I learned that I was also eligible for Hall County scholarships like the
William T. Carlisle Memorial Scholarship and the Jim and Dee Snow Optimist
Scholarship.

Time Management 9/8/15 Assignment
With school
coursework, my future internship, a job, marching band, the church orchestra
and youth group, community service, and general family and friend activities, I
feel confident to say that I am a fairly occupied person on a regular basis.
Although the responsibilities I listed out are my main ones, they also included
sub-tasks that I must accomplish. So in order to assure that I accomplish every
assignment, task, and job I am given, I tend to write myself a schedule with
the importance of the task I have to finish. I manage my time by scheduling my
activities on multiple different days so that I am not overworked on one single
day, and I always set time aside for emergencies, to finish longer tasks, and
if possible, relax. In my future internship, I believe that time-management
will be key to my excellence and success. I want to accomplish and learn as
much as possible in the time allotted, so I will make sure to schedule myself appropriately
and give every task the required amount of time it needs to be finished successfully!

Growing Leaders Blog 8/31 Assignment
After
reading Growing Leaders, which can be
found at http://growingleaders.com/,
by Tim Elmore, I was amazed by the sudden realization of how serious and
profound an internship or mentorship can truly be. In the blog, the writer
explains that a friend of his had had an unfortunate and disappointing
experience with his interns. The summer interns were 6 college students, and
some of them were preparing to graduate and enter the workforce. The students
represented millions of college students that would soon graduate. However,
from his experience with these interns, the internee knew that the adults in
their lives had not prepared them. The writer wants the reader to understand
that an internship is truly just a prolonged, 12-week interview. Each and every
day at an internship should be seen as an opportunity to watch and learn and
work. The writer listed off the most sought out qualities in an intern, and
they included: teach ability, initiative, responsibility, and energy.
As for my interview, I viewed this
blog as an eye-opener and a reminder for my standards and actions. In general,
I will try to act as mature and serious as possible. I want to be a mentee that
is easily taught, and I want to be viewed as an asset to the company. I want to
be energetic and responsible at work. I want to have a successful year with my
mentor, and in order to positively ensure that this will happen, I will always
greet my mentor with a respectful saying, followed by their name, and a firm,
professional handshake. Every day, I can set up a serious and enthusiastic tone
with that. Afterwards, I will also ask what must be done for the day, and if
there isn’t a specific task, I will help in any way possible. This step will
demonstrate and prove my initiative. Lastly, I will ask to make sure that all
tasks and jobs have been finished before I leave every day, and I will leave
with a firm handshake and a salutation with their name.

Work Ethics Assignment 8/27/15
In the Work Ethics PowerPoint and assignment, I briefly
learned and reviewed the importance of proper work ethic and work skills. In
the presentation, it was said that work ethic was defined as the cultural
normality that promotes and motivates responsibility and accountability at work
because it is believed that work has a certain, natural value. Work ethic is
essential to all types of jobs, sports, and activities that one is involved in.
It truly proves what a person of capable of doing and accomplishing.
Any type of work ethic was able to
be categorized into one of three categories: Interpersonal skills, Initiative,
and Dependability. Interpersonal skills can defined as the common communication
and interaction skills we, as people, use every day. These skills are necessary for team projects
and jobs, and they can really demonstrate how an employee may act around
coworkers and customers. Initiative is then defined as the ability of work or take
lead independently. This is needed in modern workplaces because there is often
not a direct manager or boss to tell you what to do. Dependability is the last
of the ethics, but it is certainly the most important. It includes honesty,
reliability, and punctuality. It is a very necessary trait for the workplace
and in every day-life. After taking the Occupational Work Ethic Inventory,
which is a type of test to rate your work ethics, I saw that I scored almost as
highly as the average male adult scores provided. The scores at the end of the
test were an average of 1133 working adults, and they had scores 5.75 for
Interpersonal Skills, 5.52 for Initiative, and 6.07 for Dependability. I received
scores of 5.32, 4.95, and 5.66, which came as a surprise. On one hand, I was
surprised to see that I even scored that highly, but on the other hand, I
viewed those scores as a stepping stone for me to continue to improve my work
ethic skills.

Communication- 8/21/15 Assignment
As stated in the "Communication Presentation", communication skills are now ranked as the number one qualities and skills to have for employment. Communication defines us. We speak in many different manners. We might be laid back and informal with our friends, but when speaking to our parents, teachers, or coworkers, we do our best to sound professional and formal.
With my friends and classmates, I am a very relaxed and informal person in my speech. I might use words like "dude, man, hey" or "what's up". These are very relaxed terms and words, and I believe these are the most commonly used phrases and words when around your friends. Because of the type of relationship and occasion, I believe that using this informal speech is alright, but it would not be polite or professional to use those phrases when speaking to an employer or in an interview. However when it comes to speaking to my parents or other family members, I personally believe that some of these phrases can be used, but there is also a need for more respect when communicating.
When I speak to my family members, I tend to be a serious personal while still having a friendly attitude. I do use phrases like "hey" and "what's up" sometimes, but since my parents, aunts, and uncles are all adults, I tend to use a more formal way of speaking. I believe that communicating with family members can be a blend of formal and informal speech while having a friendly and serious tone.
When speaking to a manager, boss, or potential employer, one should speak in the most professional, serious, and formal way possible. Job interviews are a very serious occasion, so when answering, and maybe asking, questions, we should speak in a respectable way, so that we may be taken seriously. We cannot use phrases the ones I had previously stated. Instead, an interviewer can use phrases like "ma'am, sir, Mrs. ___, or Mr. ___". I have had an interview for my current job, and at the interview I did my best to dress professionally, speak formally, and act serious, With proper and formal communication skills, serious actions, and just an overall positive attitude, a job, mentorship, or any position can be easily gotten!

Leadership/TedX Talk Blog 8/10/15
In JD Russo's talk, he spoke about not only the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, but also about activism and change. In his talk, JD Russo caught my attention by relate to me and the rest of the audience. He is a teenager, just like me, so this proved that my age cannot limit me and my success. He also spoke of indifference and not-caring. His comments on these phrases really caused me to think of my actions and why I do what I do. I took his TedX Talk as a motivating talk, and I now realize that I must really commit to my mentorship by caring in order to change the world around me for the better.
Something I am passionate about is providing professional and quality medical care to people that cannot afford it or do not have access to it in their regular lives. There is nothing humane and fair about this problem, and through this mentorship and through my future education, I thrive and hope to provide medical attention to all people.
